LOS ANGELES — Ed Asner, the burly and prolific character actor who became a star in center age as the gruff but lovable newsman Lou Grant, 1st in the hit comedy “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and afterwards in the drama “Lou Grant,” died Sunday. He was 91.

Asner’s agent verified the actor’s loss of life in an email to The Connected Press. Asner’s official Twitter account involved a note from his youngsters: “We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed absent this early morning peacefully. Text are unable to categorical the disappointment we feel. With a kiss on your head- Goodnight dad. We love you.”
