As the editor of Movie journal (1988-1999), I rubbed shoulders with the greatest shutterbugs in showbiz, which includes Gautam Rajadhyaksha, Jagdish Mali and Rakesh Shrestha. I conceptualised my protect shoots and collaborated with the photographer and designer to achieve the wished-for outcome.
I would like to believe that the bedrock for this was laid by my previously stint as a photojournalist. In 1985, armed with a Nikon camera, I ventured into image-journalism to complement my modest salary and seize movie celebs not just in phrases but also in pictures.
Dimple and Jackie have been my favorite muses but I shot almost everybody: Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor, Meenakshi Seshadri, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir and Salman Khan…
Here, I share some black and white pictures and vibrant memories of a superb cinematic period.
“You are Mr Walrus”
I clicked this picture of the stunning, auburn-haired Dimple Kapadia in 1986 on the lawns of Hotel Sunshine N Sand. She was shooting for Insaaf, her 1st hit following a 10-yr break for marriage and babies.
Dimple had a crackling perception of humour. She nicknamed me Mr Walrus as I experienced a thick moustache that drooped unevenly on equally sides.
Dimple had an insubstantial position in Ram Lakhan, and she was badgered by the push for an rationalization. She asked me to feel of a little something witty. I joked, “Say you were being compensated 6 lakhs to toss your hair about in the movie.” We laughed and I forgot about it. When I fulfilled her future, she guffawed, “That quote has created it to the include of a journal!”
Kid-like, but not childish
This picture of Sridevi was shot in 1988 at a suburban studio through the shooting of Yash Chopra’s Chandni. I was a rookie journalist when I was initial introduced to an unsure newcomer named Sridevi. 6 yrs later on, when I grew to become the editor of Movie journal, that gawky lady also experienced metamorphosed into a self-assured megastar. I desired my to start with include to be a standout, so I determined to provide Sridevi and Aamir Khan together. For the duration of the shoot, Aamir whispered to me, “She seems to be taller than me.” Sridevi overheard and quietly flung absent her heeled sneakers.
Sridevi could be little one-like, not childish. Once, as my reporter interviewed Sridevi in my existence, the actress turned to me and whispered, “She questioned me to remark on the changing deal with of Mumbai. How can a metropolis have a confront?”
No holds ‘bar’-pink
Chunky Panday was generally a activity — he took my cue and responded to my shout so I could get an aerial shot of him from the very first floor.
Chunky’s birthday events at his lavish Bandra pad were legend. He was quite well-known among Bollywood stars. He would choose me apart and jocularly whisper, “Come, I will inform you which of the Bacardi bottles at the bar is authentic.”
Why she never ever eats at 5-star hotels
I shot this image of the hazel-eyed elegance Raakhee in 1988 at her Aptegaon farmhouse. I was wary of the famously whimsical actress and Jagdish Mali bluntly launched me with, “Raakheeji, Dinesh is fearful of you.” She impishly questioned me, “Primary tumko kha jaaungi?” Rather, I was the one particular feasting as Raakhee cooked spicy biryani and delectable Bengali-style fish curry for the whole unit.
Modest speak reveals more about stars than recorded interviews. In the post-lunch split, Rakhee instructed me that she under no circumstances eats at five-star hotels because she was not at ease with a fork and knife. “I starve at events I buy area company when I am at spot shootings.”
A brat with a heart
I shot this photograph of Salman Khan in the late 1980s at Natraj Studios. Right before the launch of Maine Pyar Kiya, Salman would regularly cling out at my magazine office environment, volunteering to form articles for me and jabbering non-cease with my feminine workers. In his quieter moments, he cherished to doodle, an early sign that he would paint finally. He was warm, welcoming and funny. A brat but with a coronary heart.
When MPK introduced, I explained to Salman he experienced a blockbuster in hand. That was the month Amitabh Bachchan began talking to the press after many years of silence and all rival publications experienced him on their handles. I decided to put Salman and the gamble paid out off!
His boisterous twins
This photo was shot down below the Bandra developing, Landmark, in which legendary 1960s actress Sadhana had a swish sea-going through flat. Her husband, director RK Nayyar, was shooting scenes for his thriller Qatl (1986). For the duration of a break, I captured Shatrughan Sinha with his toddler twins Luv and Kush just about every was as cute as a button. When Sadhana addressed them to ice-product cones, the twins jumped all over her couch, dripping ice-product while she smiled indulgently.
Pulled the wool above my eyes
I shot this photograph of a young Aamir Khan, with newborn unwanted fat even now intact, in the late 1980s at Sea Rock Lodge. A day prior to I satisfied him, an actor had inadvertently allow it slip that Aamir, a teenager sensation submit Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, was secretly married to Reena Dutta. I needed the tale from the horse’s mouth. Aamir totally denied the relationship.
Dissatisfied, I questioned him to pose for me on the stairs of the resort that led to the swimming pool. He fortunately obliged.
The final showman
I selected this photo since it captures Subhash Ghai’s passion for cinema. I shot it at an outdoor site, one of the lots of he invited the press to.
A couple a long time ago, I attended a do thrown by the dirctor at his Carter Highway terrace flat and memories of many lavish parties hosted by him flooded back. An enterprising showman, he when organised a multi-cinema premiere and convinced editors to travel in a luxury van from theatre to theatre.
The curious circumstance of purana chawal
This photo of Jackie Shroff was shot in 1986 in Pahalgam on locale for Subhash Ghai’s Karma. When Jackie noticed me clicking away, he jocularly commented, “Kya bhiddu, ab yeh dukaan (photography) bhi khol diya?” In his pre-stardom times, Jackie would borrow a bike from our frequent friend, Ramesh Patel and sometimes be a part of us in the Sunday gully cricket.
Jackie calls me “purana chawal” every time we satisfy. His explanation: “Chawal jitna purana, utna achcha.”
The genial grump
This shot of Rishi Kapoor was lit for colour cinematography as for each Yash Chopra’s instructions for Chandni, but I captured it in my favourite medium, black and white, taking total gain of the chiaroscuro lighting.
When I 1st interviewed Rishi, I considered of him as a bear with a sore paw. I was penning a posthumous tribute to Raj Kapoor, and Rishi was disgruntled and unwilling. When he relented, he started speaking wonderfully. He was dubbing at Ketnav, a stone’s toss from his Pali Hill bungalow and prompt we complete the interview there more than lunch. Halfway home, he casually questioned if I had a vehicle. When I stated I experienced my motorbike, he glared at me, “Then why are we going for walks?” At household, he ate a salad only to adhere to it with a full food! He stated wryly, “The salad was to make Neetu satisfied.”
